What is The Feldenkrais Method®
The Feldenkrais Method is a unique, gentle movement-based learning process that encourages you to develop your self awareness – the way you move, sense, think and feel.
Created by Moshe Feldenkrais (there had to be a reason for the unusual name!) and drawing on his diverse experience as a physicist, engineer, Judo master, and student of human development and neuroscience, The Feldenkrais Method is an innovative and empowering approach to healing and enhancing your body movement and sense of self.
It creates a context for you to develop greater awareness of how you move, provides you with the opportunity to experience differences in the quality of your movement, and ultimately aims to give you a greater sense of ease and comfort as you identify and experience new possibilities for movement and life.
Through slow, gentle movement and directed attention, the Feldenkrais Method draws your attention to the way you move, the image you have created of yourself and how that image interacts with your internal and external environment.
It gives you the opportunity to reduce nervous tension that ‘holds’ your skeleton in habitual, often hidden, postures and movement patterns and gives your nervous system the potential to find ease and clarity not only in movement but in thought, sensation, and improved regulation and understanding of feelings.
Who should try the Feldenkrais Method?
Feldenkrais is suitable for anyone of any age and ability. It is ideal for you if you are:
- Keen to improve the quality of your life. “Movement is life. Life is a process. Improve the quality of the process and you improve the quality of life itself.”
- Experiencing chronic pain, long term repetitive injuries, neurological or movement issues as it gives you the opportunity to tune into your current
movement, explore alternatives, and open up new pathways where new possibilities for movement can emerge. It might be the difference you’ve been
- Looking to enhance and deepen your sense and understanding of yourself.
- Seeking to improve your physical performance – in any aspect of your life, be that as dancer, a musician or sports person, in the garden, even in sitting in the office and to simply move with greater ease through life.
“What I’m after isn’t flexible bodies, but flexible brains. What I’m after is to restore each person to their human dignity.” ~Moshe Feldenkrais
You can experience the Feldenkrais Method in two ways:
1. Group classes are called Awareness Through Movement® (currently available at Tree of Life)
Awareness Through Movement (ATM) lessons guide you through carefully structured movement sequences, crafted to bring particular attention to how you move.
Over the course of a lesson you may be asked to lie down, sit or stand. You are guided through novel or unfamiliar movements to take you outside of your habitual motor patterns.
The 1-hour lessons are held in the Tree of Life Studio and are designed to be held in a small group. You will be asked to complete a survey before you arrive.
You do not need to bring anything, all equipment is provided.
It is best to wear comfortable clothes that don’t restrict your movement, such as yoga or tracksuit pants and top.
Private lessons are also available.
2. Private lessons are called Functional Integration® (coming to Tree of Life in 2020)
During these sessions, a highly trained practitioner will use touch to physically guide you through safe, effortless movements.
Lessons take place on low, padded tables and are a dialogue of movement, touch and words that highlight current patterns of movement and of holding tension and bring awareness to new easier modes of action.
If you would like to find out more, please contact the Tree of Life for ATM class times, or to be notified when Function Integration becomes available.
“In order to change our mode of action, we must change the image of ourselves that we carry within us” Moshe Feldenkrais
About Bec Speed
Bec’s journey to become a Feldenkrais practitioner and current teacher of Awareness Through Movement, has been a one of self-discovery, learning, continued education and life experience.
As a junior triathlete competing at an international level, Bec fuelled her passion to further understand the components of elite sport and gained a degree in Human Movement (1999). Heavy training loads and, what she now recognises as ineffective movement patterns, lead to chronic injury where she could no longer run competitively, so took up competitive cycling. During this time Bec became a patient of Dr John (here at Tree of Life) and have been fortunate to be under his care ever since. Her husband and three children are all regular clients of Dr John and Dr Fred.
After returning from a few years competing overseas, Bec followed her parents’ example, completed a Diploma of Education and taught at a local primary school until having children (2006).
Bec’s life-long passion for improved movement, first as an athlete and now as a necessity for remaining as active as she can be, lead her to discover the Feldenkrais method. Bec was so taken and with the gentle nature, the self-exploration and discovery, the novelty, the philosophy and the personal healing capabilities of the Feldenkrais method that lead her to enrolled and began her Feldenkrais training.
Bec now qualified to teach Feldenkrais’ Awareness Through Movement classes cannot wait to share the joy, freedom and integration that these classes can bring.
